Jaw Botox (also called masseter Botox) has become one of the most popular non-surgical options for softening a wide or square lower face. But despite its popularity, many people still have questions about what it can and cannot do.
Here’s a clear, practical guide based on how the treatment actually works.
What Exactly Is Jaw (Masseter) Botox?
Jaw Botox uses botulinum toxin to temporarily relax the masseter muscles — the strong chewing muscles at the angles of your jaw.
When these muscles are overactive or enlarged (from genetics, teeth grinding, clenching, or frequent chewing), they can make the lower face look wider or more square. By reducing muscle activity, the masseter may gradually decrease in size over the following weeks, creating a softer contour.
The process is straightforward:
The toxin is injected into the masseter
Muscle activity relaxes
The muscle gradually becomes smaller
Will It Actually Slim Your Face?
It depends on what’s making your jaw look wide.
Muscle — This is what jaw Botox is designed for. A strong or enlarged masseter often responds well.
Bone — Botox will not change your jawbone. Bone width can only be altered surgically. Some lifting treatments may soften the appearance of the jawline, but they do not reduce bone.
Fat — Botox does not remove facial fat. If excess fat is contributing to a fuller lower face, other options such as Ultherapy Prime, XERF, ONDA, or fat-dissolving injections may be more suitable.
An in-person assessment is the only reliable way to determine which approach is most appropriate for you.
When Will You See Results?
Results appear gradually:
Days 1–2 weeks: Muscle relaxation begins. Many people notice reduced jaw tension first.
4–8 weeks: Facial contour changes often become more noticeable.
8–12 weeks: Peak effect is typically seen around this time.
These are approximate ranges. Individual response varies depending on muscle size, dose, and personal factors.
To maintain results, most people need a session every 4–6 months.
How Long Does It Last?
A commonly cited range for the temporary effects of botulinum toxin is 3–6 months. Visible jawline changes may follow a slightly different timeline because muscle volume reduces gradually and also returns gradually.
Key points to keep in mind:
Results fade over time as muscle activity returns and the masseter may regain some volume.
Everyone responds differently — muscle size, product, dose, and individual metabolism all play a role.
There is no need to rush the next session. Timing should be based on assessment rather than a fixed calendar.
What About Side Effects?
Most side effects are mild and temporary.
Common
Mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness
Temporarily reduced chewing strength
Less common
Facial asymmetry or an uneven smile
Sunken cheeks or more noticeable sagging
Unusual masseter bulging
Less common effects usually improve as the Botox wears off (often within 3–6 months). Risk varies depending on facial anatomy, dose, and injection technique.
Why can cheeks look sunken?
The masseter runs from below the cheekbone down to the jaw. Injections are usually placed in the lower part of the muscle. If product reaches the upper portion, or if the face is already slim with prominent cheekbones or reduced skin elasticity, the cheek area can appear hollower.
Serious reactions are rare, but any difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing, or generalized muscle weakness after treatment, requires immediate medical attention.
How much does jaw Botox cost in Korea?
Prices typically range from about ₩30,000 to over ₩100,000 for 50 units, depending on whether a Korean or imported toxin is used.

Before You Book — Aftercare & Important Notes
Mild bruising, warmth, swelling, or redness can occur and usually settles on its own.
Same day
Stay upright for 3–4 hours. You can normally wash your face and apply makeup after 2–3 hours.
First 2–3 days
Avoid hard or chewy foods (gum, dried squid, etc.). Frequent hard chewing can encourage the muscle to rebuild.
First week
Avoid intense exercise, alcohol, and smoking. Do not rub or press the treated area. Skip saunas, jjimjilbang, strong exfoliation, and facial massage.
Most importantly: jaw Botox is not suitable for every facial shape. A proper assessment makes a significant difference. Always follow your clinician’s specific aftercare instructions.
