Olive Young After a Skin Treatment: What to Buy | Forena Clinic

Olive Young operates more than 1,300 branches in Korea. This guide covers the small number of products that suit recovering skin, the terms that identify them on Korean packaging, and the ingredients worth avoiding for the first couple of weeks.
Your clinic's instructions come first
The aftercare guidance given by the clinic that treated you takes precedence over everything on this page. This guide addresses a narrower question: how to read Korean packaging while your skin is still recovering.
Two points before you buy anything.
Do not apply a new product to recently treated skin without confirming it with your clinic first. Some treatments leave the barrier temporarily compromised, and a product described as gentle is not necessarily formulated for that condition.
Avoid replacing your whole routine in a single purchase. If several new products are introduced at once and your skin reacts, identifying the cause becomes very difficult.
A cleanser that does not strip
During recovery, a cleanser needs to remove sunscreen and residue without disturbing the barrier. A foaming wash that leaves the skin feeling tight is not appropriate, and a full double cleanse is usually more than recovering skin requires.
The terms to look for:
Korean | Meaning |
저자극 | Low irritation |
약산성 | Mildly acidic, closer to the skin's own pH |
무향료 | Fragrance free |
저자극 (low-irritation) carries more weight in Korea than the equivalent phrase does elsewhere. Under the Cosmetics Act, a brand printing that claim is required to hold human skin irritation test data supporting it, produced in line with internationally recognised safety evaluation guidelines. It is one of the more dependable words on Korean packaging.
Products that instruct you to massage vigorously are best left for another time.
A moisturiser that supports the barrier
Moisturiser is the product most worth choosing carefully, and the one on which people most often overspend. Recovering skin needs water retained in its upper layers and its lipid content restored, and the ingredients that achieve both are inexpensive and long established.
Korean | Ingredient |
히알루론산 | Hyaluronic acid. Binds water in the upper layers. |
글리세린 | Glycerin. The same function, older and very well studied. |
판테놀 | Panthenol. Supports the barrier, with reasonable human data behind it. |
세라마이드 | Ceramide. One of the lipids the barrier is partly built from. |
병풀 / 시카 | Centella asiatica. The soothing ingredient Korean brands build entire ranges around. |
A single product containing two or three of them is sufficient.
Sunscreen
If your treatment involved light, energy or exfoliation, sunscreen is not optional.
Korean sunscreens are sorted into three categories, and the category is printed on the front of the bottle.
Korean | Category |
무기자차 | Mineral filters only. Under both Korean and international standards this means zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. |
유기자차 | Chemical filters, with no mineral filters present. |
혼합자차 | A combination of the two. |
Korean clinics generally direct sensitive, reactive and post-procedure skin toward mineral filters only, on the basis that chemical filters are absorbed into the skin and are more likely to sting on a barrier that has not fully settled.
Look for SPF 50+ and PA++++ on the front of the bottle. Applying a sufficient quantity and reapplying across a long day outdoors matters more than the category you choose.
What to avoid for the first two weeks
Most clinics allow roughly 10 to 14 days before active ingredients are reintroduced. The terms below are the ones that identify them on Korean packaging.
레티놀 / 레티날. Retinol and other retinoids. A frequent cause of delayed reactions in patients whose skin appeared settled a few days earlier.
AHA / BHA / PHA, 각질, 필링. Chemical exfoliants. 각질 refers to dead skin cells and 필링 to peeling.
비타민C. High-strength vitamin C, particularly in the L-ascorbic acid form.
스크럽, 딥클렌징. Scrubs and physical exfoliation, including konjac sponges and cleansing brushes.
향료, 에센셜오일, 티트리. Fragrance and essential oils.
스피큘. Spicule products contain needle-shaped structures derived from freshwater sponges, made of biogenic silica. They work by physically penetrating the surface of the skin in order to carry ingredients deeper. Korean dermatologists advise against their use on skin that is dry or unsettled, which makes them unsuitable for anyone in the weeks following a treatment.
Practical notes for visitors
Travel and trial sizes. These are widely stocked and are the sensible way to trial an unfamiliar product on skin that is still recovering, at very little cost if it turns out not to suit you.
Tax refund. A physical passport is required at the till; a photograph is not accepted. The minimum qualifying purchase is ₩15,000 per receipt, and immediate in-store refunds are available up to ₩1,000,000 per transaction and ₩5,000,000 across a single trip. These thresholds are revised periodically, so the notice displayed at the counter is the reliable source.
Language. Olive Young introduced handheld translation devices covering 16 languages across its stores in 2024, and branches in tourist districts use them regularly.
Flying home shortly. Cabin air is extremely dry. A plain occlusive balm applied over your moisturiser will serve you better on a long flight than any product containing active ingredients.
Questions we are asked
How soon can I return to my usual skincare?
This depends entirely on the treatment. Following some procedures, a gentle moisturiser and sunscreen are appropriate the same day. Following others, water alone is advised for several days, with a further two week interval before active ingredients are reintroduced. The clinic that treated you can give you the precise interval for your procedure, and it is worth asking rather than estimating.
Can I use a sheet mask?
In most cases, yes. A plain soothing mask (진정 마스크) is generally suitable and is often welcome while the skin feels dry or tight. Avoid any mask that cools, warms or tingles, and avoid those containing acids, retinol, high-strength vitamin C or strong fragrance. Remove it at the stated time rather than leaving it on until it dries, which offers no further benefit and tends to leave the skin feeling tighter than before.
Do I need to buy Korean products specifically?
No. If you already own a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser and a sunscreen your skin tolerates, you have everything described here. Korean products are convenient and reasonably priced while you are in the country, but they are not medically necessary.
