Who Should NOT Get Skin Treatments in Korea? 6 Situations to Know Before You Book

Korea has become one of the top destinations in the world for skin treatments, but a good clinic won't just tell you what they can do for your skin. They'll also tell you when to wait.
Before you book a laser, peel, or injectable treatment in Seoul, here are six situations where our team at Forena Clinic recommends pausing, adjusting the plan, or getting medical clearance first.
1. Pregnant or Breastfeeding
Most elective skin treatments, including facials in some cases, are postponed during pregnancy and nursing for safety reasons. Lasers, chemical peels, injectables, and energy-based devices are generally not recommended until after pregnancy and breastfeeding are complete.
Our recommendation: Postpone treatment until after pregnancy and nursing.
2. Active Cold Sores or Skin Infections
If you have a cold sore, active breakout of infection, or any inflamed area on the skin, treating that area increases the risk of complications and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
Our recommendation: Treat the infection first. Once the skin has fully settled, treatment can proceed safely.
3. Sunburned, Freshly Tanned, or Have Open Wounds
Recent UV exposure and broken or compromised skin raise the risk of burns and pigmentation issues, especially with laser toning, laser hair removal, chemical peels, and microneedling.
Our recommendation: Wait until redness and peeling have fully resolved before booking energy-based or exfoliating treatments.
4. Pacemaker, Metal Implants, Blood Thinners, or Uncontrolled Diabetes
Certain medical devices and health conditions change what's safe to perform, particularly with energy devices and injectables. This isn't a reason to rule out treatment altogether, it simply means your provider needs the full picture first.
Our recommendation: Disclose all medical devices, medications, and conditions during your consultation so our doctors can confirm what's safe, or whether medical clearance is needed first.
5. History of Keloids or Hypertrophic Scars
If your skin has a history of forming keloid or hypertrophic scars, some procedures, particularly microneedling and deeper peels, carry a higher risk of abnormal scarring.
Our recommendation: A personalized medical assessment before treatment. This isn't an automatic no, but it does mean proceeding with caution and a tailored plan.
6. Deeper Skin Tones
Deeper skin tones deserve a tailored, skin-safe approach. Certain laser treatments may carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in deeper skin tones.
Our recommendation: Alternative treatment options may be a better fit. Our team will walk you through what's safest for your skin tone during consultation.
Why This Matters When Choosing a Clinic in Korea
With so many clinics competing for international patients, it can be tempting to book the treatment with the flashiest before-and-after photos. But the clinics worth trusting are the ones that are upfront about when not to treat, not just what they can sell you.
At Forena Clinic, every treatment plan starts with a consultation where our doctors review your medical history, skin condition, and goals before recommending anything. If a treatment isn't right for you at this moment, we'll tell you, and help you plan for when it is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to get skin treatments in Korea while pregnant?
No. Most clinics, including Forena, recommend postponing elective skin treatments during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Can I still get treatment if I have a pacemaker or metal implants?
Possibly, but you'll need to disclose this during consultation so your provider can determine what's safe or whether medical clearance is required first.
Are laser treatments safe for deeper skin tones?
Some carry a higher risk of pigmentation changes in deeper skin tones. A qualified clinic will recommend alternative treatments tailored to your skin type rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
